On March 31, 2012, I saw a facebook post about Fresh Step’s newest product:  Organic Bacon Scented Litter.  Seemed odd, but so did chocolate covered bacon…until I tried it.  I made a mental note to give this litter a try.As I thought about introducing my kitty boys to this new product, I was unsure.  How would I feel about the smell of bacon throughout the house?  Would the smell elicit incessant hunger?  Would the house seem greasy due to this smell?  Would this product draw unwanted bugs into my home?

Embarrassing as it may be, I must admit that I have an affinity for the smell of Fresh Step.  It’s an odor I associate with my precious kitties:  the first thing I smell when I enter the house, the last thing I often smell at night, the first smell I encounter each morning…it’s their smell which makes it comforting.  As I considered the product, I was hopeful that some of Fresh Step’s true essence would remain.  Either way, I personally wanted AJ & Marlin to experience the paw activated fragrance technology that would release a hint of bacon scent each time one of them entered their Booda Box, along with the  urine activated sizzle sound I knew they would love!

It was May before I got around to actively attempting to purchase the product.  I casually looked my local PetSmarts in Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, but didn’t see it.  Finally, I asked an employee when I could expect the product to be available and was told “We don’t carry bacon scented litter in this store.”  The next week, I was traveling in New York City and attempted to get a whiff there, to no avail.  Lastly, while AJ & Marlin were visiting their Grandma in Norfolk, VA, I tried the PetSmart there, again with no luck.  I called a store and asked when they would receive a shipment, to which the response was, “We just received a shipment from Fresh Step and I’m pretty sure there’s no bacon scented litter in it.  I’ve never heard of it.  Try again next week.”  Frustrated, I’m thinking to myself, ” This stuff must be selling off the shelves!”  Great product reviews and support from “the bacon community, ” too!

So, I made my way to the Internet, to sniff out an eTailer carrying this product, only to learn that FreshStep’s Organic Bacon Scented Litter does not exist!  If you recall, I mentioned first hearing about the product on March 31st.  The product was an April Fool’s Day hoax . . . and, I was probably the only fool still looking for it…a month later!
